Thank you for writing this stunningly vulnerable and beautiful essay, Sophie. I am so, so sorry for your loss of a treasured pet, Scratch. I have loved reading about her and I won’t forget her. I am a sensitive soul who is just learning to embrace, appreciate and manage my own intensity. Your wisdom to label grief as being without a size is truly liberating for me. Having just spent the last 48 hours bereft over a sparrow from our yard’s flock hitting our window and the last 12 months bereft over my eldest child’s individuation, you have reminded me that I’m allowed to grieve all of the things, no matter their “size.” Thank you also for the examples of self-care and self-reflection in the face of your grief. I applaud your self-love and courage to carry out these acts of emotional regulation and self-awareness. I am not so brave many days and I will remember your choices as my inspiration. Life is a tricky business, much like motherhood, I suppose. Sigh. Take care of yourself.
